Sr. Automation Engineer

Summary of job contents

 The Automation Engineer II is responsible for the development and implementation of advanced technological projects that leverage specialized knowledge in automation engineering. This includes achieving high integration between various brands of PLCs, HMIs, robots, Automated Mobile Robots (AMRs), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), user interfaces, and specialized software—both proprietary to Festo and third-party applications. The engineer will also focus on the integration of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions and communication protocols to create seamless, efficient, and innovative automation systems.

 

Key accountabilities

 

  • Manage and guide customer-focused projects throughout the entire product lifecycle, including synthesizing project requirements through close collaboration with customers, leading conceptual design efforts, supporting the preparation of detailed quotations, and assisting on the execution of comprehensive design documentation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the development and execution of advanced automation projects, ensuring the seamless integration of diverse technologies, including PLCs, HMIs, robots, AMRs, MES, and IIoT solutions.
  • Analyze and translate complex customer requirements into innovative automation solutions that enhance operational efficiency and drive business growth.
  • Define ERP solutions, oversee order fulfillment, and ensure thorough solution validation.
  • Lead the design and selection of sophisticated components and systems, managing the entire lifecycle from conceptualization to implementation, while ensuring alignment with strategic business objectives.
  • Provide expertise to help the technical writing team on developing technology courses that meet the requirements established by the Festo Didactic Product Manager or R&D Manager.
  • Respnsible for creating and adapting courseware to address specific project needs, and collaborating as subject matter expert to produce accurate content.
  • Define troubleshooting activities that effectively communicate key technical methods, supporting students in their pursuit of advanced manufacturing careers.
  • Spearhead the development of automation solutions, leveraging advanced engineering principles and methodologies to enhance system performance and reliability.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities for process optimization, cost reduction, and technological advancement.
  • Champion the integration of emerging technologies and industry trends, positioning the organization as a leader in automation innovation.
  • Maintain continuous and effective communication with customers, sales teams, and technical partners to ensure alignment on project goals and deliverables.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration across departments and global teams to foster a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Deliver high-impact training sessions and presentations to diverse audiences, including clients and internal teams, to promote understanding and adoption of advanced automation solutions.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor to facilitate the successful adoption of cutting-edge automation technologies.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages professional growth and knowledge transfer.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams, ensuring the successful execution of complex automation projects while cultivating a culture of accountability and excellence.
  • Actively participate in competency development initiatives, contributing to the creation of a highly skilled workforce in automation technology.

 

Knowledge and Experience

 

  •  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field. Mechatronics Engineering with a focus on Automation, Controls, Mechanical and Electrical is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5+ years of advanced experience in automation engineering, with a proven track record of leading complex projects that integrate multiple technologies.
  • Experience in the automation industry, demonstrating a deep understanding of market dynamics and technological advancements.

  • Proficiency with HMIs, PLCs, AMRs, CNC Machine tooling, Machine Vision Systems, Industrial 3D printing, Electric Automation Drives / Motion and robot software tools of the leading brands in the industry used in the integration of Festo Didactic products (such as Rockwell, Siemens, Festo, CoDeSys, Fanuc, ABB, Zebra, SensoPart, UR Robots, Kuka, Sick, Turck,  Robotino, EMCO, Wago, Balluff, Mitsubishi and Omron).
  • Proficiency in advanced automation technologies, including PLCs, HMIs, robots, AMRs, MES, and IIoT systems.
  • Proficiency in IIoT communication protocols, with a strong command of industry standards such as Profinet, Ethernet/IP, MQTT, IO-Link, and OPC UA, among many others, facilitating seamless integration and interoperability of advanced automation systems.
  • Conversant in CAD and 3D modeling tools (SolidWorks, Onshape) at a power user level, as well as ERP software and communication protocols.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical systems, alongside a strong grasp of local electrical codes and standards.
  • Proficient in integration of MES (Manufacturing Execution System), manufacturing IT, industrial networks, and applications.
