Purpose/Mission

Festo’s CS Division designs unique solutions to integrate into our customer’s larger applications. The role of Project Engineer will be to take designs of multiple projects from concept to completion. This includes the definition of customer requirements, conceptual and detail design, test, and documentation. During sales phase, the Project Engineer provides technical assistance to Sales Engineering to identify customer requirements and project scope, and then propose viable solutions using Festo products and services. This is a role for a creative engineer that likes customer interaction, problem solving, and the personal fulfillment of technical accomplishment. 

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide subject matter expertise and technical assistance during the pre-sales phase to help distill, collect, and validate customer requirements in preparation for conceptual design and quotation.
  • Analyze and identify customer requirements and defines solutions through the application, combination, and modification of Festo's products and services.
  • Design or selects components, define scopes of delivery, solicit bids for third party materials and services, create and manage Bills of Material, prepare cost estimates, and prepare customer facing offer documentation for the proposed solutions.
  • Support as necessary the presentation of the solution proposal in order to win the business.
  • Review customer order documents to assess scope alignment and delivery requirements.
  • Develop project documentation such as drawings, bills of materials, technical data, test specifications, labelling, packaging, ERP definition.
  • Collect feedback following order fulfillment and customer validation activities and implement corrections as required.
  • Travels domestically and Abroad as required. Nominally less than 25%.
  • Work, as directed, on special projects and assignments deemed necessary as assigned by Festo Management.
  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs including selection of technology, sizing of components, electrical/pneumatic schematics and 2D/3D CAD, controller software, tool/process design, sourcing, test equipment, packaging.
  • Responsible to adhere to and enhance relevant departmental and industrial standard design guidelines and practices.
  • Develops special Customer Solution System test procedure, hardware, and software if the input specifications required.

  • Lead simple to moderate project execution teams, including engineering, production, logistics, and quality; to prepare and successfully execute the proposed solution plan to satisfy the project requirements.
  • Informal subject matter mentoring relationship supports more junior peers and cross-training initiatives.

 

Required Experience:

Education & Background

  •  Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics.
  •  >10 years previous automation design for industrial equipment necessary.
  •  General knowledge/background in the following areas:
  • Machine Vision.
  • Pneumatic circuit design.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Kinematic and dynamic analysis of 3D motion systems.
  • Motor technology (servo, linear, stepper) and controls/sensors.
  • Design of multi axis handling systems
  • Some familiarity with industrial sectors that utilize automation: i.e. bio-tech, food packaging, Semiconductor, etc.
  • 3D CAD experience, AutoDesk Inventor and Pro Engineer/Creo preferred.
  • General knowledge of Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems; SAP preferred.
  • Design for manufacturability and cost efficiency.
  • Prototype transfer from R&D to manufacturing.
  • Some mentoring and task delegation of junior-level engineers.

 

Competencies

  • Independent, organized, and self-managing with ability to work independently on different projects simultaneously.
  • Capable of working in an interdisciplinary team (mechanical, electrical, software) of engineers.
  • This engineer owns the project end to end: from purchase order entry, design acceptance with the customer, ordering material, assembly and commissioning.
  • Some travel may be required < 10%
